Universal Design: Increasing Access to Learning

Date/Time: Wednesday, March 20, 2024

Universal design at American River College logo

In this session we will build upon the foundations of universal design by starting with access – we can’t expect our students to succeed if we have created assignments or expectations that don’t provide students the guidance to succeed. The goal of this session is to identify many of the barriers that reduce student motivation and engagement in our classes. By focusing on access, universal design helps to remove barriers and promote expert learning in our students. In this session you will also explore concrete strategies of universal design to create a learning environment that motivates and encourages all students to learn. “UDI means that, rather than designing for the average student, you design instruction for potential students who have broad ranges with respect to ability, disability, age, reading level, learning style, native language, race, and ethnicity” (DO-IT). Join me for this workshop to build universal design into your practice and increase access to learning for all of  your students.
