Authentic Approaches for Deeper Learning
(A Community of Practice)
Do you worry that students aren’t deeply engaged in learning in your class? Do you worry about students cheating or relying too much on AI for assignments and assessments? Are your students struggling to demonstrate concept mastery outside of the traditional true-false and multiple-choice questions? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you would benefit from learning more about authentic assessment.
“Authentic tasks simulate adult tasks; they give students worthy work and they produce useful feedback so that students can progressively improve their understanding and performance, that is, their application of subject-matter content.” (Grant Wiggins, 1998).
Join us in this community of practice and learn how to increase engagement, comprehension, and satisfaction through designing authentic assessment for your students.

Designing and Supporting Students with Authentic Assessment
(Session 1)
Facilitators: Sonya Reichel (Math, CTL), Lori Hokerson (Psychology, UDL), Victor Zarate (Physics, CTL)
Welcome to the first of four sessions in our Rethinking Assessment: Authentic Approaches for Deeper Learning. Consider our Community of Practice as an engaging, collaborative space where faculty can explore and implement new assessment methods. Let’s rethink assessment and innovate together! In this open-door community, you can come for as many of the sessions in the series as you want. Those who attend the whole four-part series will have an opportunity to create an authentic assessment that deepens student learning, increases student satisfaction, and rejuvenates faculty passion. This series is a journey from concept to classroom-ready!
This session is designed to provide a basic foundation for understanding what authentic assessment is, why it is important, and how it can benefit you and your students. The hands-on portion of this session will be focused on a specific assessment that you would like to reimagine in your class, or a new assessment that you would like to create, so we do ask that you join us with a specific assessment in mind. You’ll examine this assessment through fresh eyes, identify hidden barriers, and implement supportive scaffolding strategies. Together, we will use Universal Design for Learning to guide us into the world of authentic assessment!
This activity meets State PD Guidelines A, B, & C; ARC Strategic Goal 1 Students First and Goal 3 Exemplary Teaching, Learning, and Working Environment; ARC Professional Development Competencies: Equity-minded Service, Effective Communication, and Technology Proficiency.
