Date/Time: Friday, March 28, 2025 - Friday, May 2, 2025
All Day
Some students in our system face big hurdles in their journey to a certificate, AA degree, or transfer. Helping students surmount these hurdles requires a personal commitment to the work, institutional changes and support, and daily implementation of culturally responsive teaching practices. During this Institute, we will:
- take a detailed look at the opportunity gap in online courses,
- explore statewide and institutional approaches to reducing the opportunity gap,
- explore our own role in enacting solutions,
- create an equity-minded syllabus, and
- develop an action plan for our online courses that integrates equity and culturally responsive teaching strategies.
Learning Outcomes
To successfully complete this course, participants will:
- Analyze their assumptions and beliefs about the diverse students served by California community colleges,
- Interrogate the alignment of their teaching values and teaching practices,
- Apply principles of Culturally Responsive Teaching & Learning (CRTL) to their online course,
- Identify and discuss course-level barriers that disproportionately impact minoritized students including unconscious bias, microaggressions, stereotype threat, and privilege and power,
- Create an equity-minded course syllabus leveraging peer feedback that welcomes and supports all students, and
- Write an action plan that describes how they will continue to advance their equity-minded online teaching practices.
